Anthony — Ready to Give Back

Growing up in Roxbury, Anthony took on the immense responsibility of fatherhood at a very young age. He worked hard to support his family, but became depressed and developed a substance use disorder to cope.

"When I lost my job and housing, I turned to Pine Street for help," Anthony says. "Staff connected me with a substance use treatment program, and I moved into a sober living facility. I’ve been in recovery for almost a year now. It’s become the most important thing in my life."

This past year, Anthony joined the iCater food services job training program. "The program has been an important part of my recovery," shares Anthony. "The staff supported me and helped me find a great job in catering when I finished my training."

Now, Anthony will be part of the 2025 workforce development graduating class. He is working to secure housing and focusing on giving back to the community.

John Fugelsang Podcast

Lyndia Downie on “Tell Me Everything” Podcast

Pine Street Inn President and Executive Director Lyndia Downie spoke with John Fugelsang on the “Tell Me Everything” podcast. During their conversation, Lyndia discussed Pine Street’s newest and largest residence in Jamaica Plain, developed in partnership with The Community Builders. Lyndia emphasized how housing initiatives play a crucial role in supporting individuals experiencing long-term homelessness.

"Shelter is a short-term solution for some people, but if we’re really going to have an impact, we need to look at people experiencing homelessness for more than a year," says Lyndia. "If you place those long-term stayers into housing with support, you help them stabilize and free up shelter capacity."

Gardening Housing Event

Cultivating Community in Pine Street Housing

Spring has sprung at Pine Street’s housing location in Dorchester. Housing staff and residents gathered to build community through a gardening project where tenants planted their favorite vegetables.

Teams of tenants will maintain their new garden throughout the summer. When it is time to harvest, residents will share fresh tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs.

Community projects like this foster a sense of ownership, pride in their residence and personal dignity for individuals who have moved out of homelessness.
