Dennis B. — “Every Day You Wake Up is a Victory”

Dennis, 73, a Vietnam-era Navy veteran, struggled to hold a steady job due to his post-war mental health challenges. Dennis moved to Boston from the Midwest in the late 1980’s, hoping to make a positive change in his life. When he arrived in Boston, he was unable to find work and became homeless. Eventually, he found his way to Pine Street Inn. Dennis has lived in Pine Street housing in Brookline for close to 30 years and is grateful to be part of his local community.

Older Adults Facing Homelessness on the Rise

This recent report from WCVB/Channel 5 explores the increase in homelessness among older adults. As the cost of housing in Greater Boston continues to rise, older adults are increasingly at risk of becoming homeless. At Pine Street Inn, we see this trend firsthand. Often, Pine Street tenants, like Pat (pictured left), become homeless as a result of unforeseen issues like medical bills due to an injury or illness.

Moving 111 People Out of Homelessness

Over the past few months, residents have begun moving into Pine Street’s newest housing development at 140 Clarendon Street, Back Bay. The project is Pine Street’s largest to date, with 111 permanent supportive housing units for individuals moving out of homelessness. Fifty residents have moved into their new apartments so far, and we anticipate that all units will be occupied by the end of the year.
