Using Life Lessons to Help Others

Johnnisha “JoJo” Willis is a supervisor at Yawkey House, one of Pine Street’s shelters. JoJo has dedicated her career to helping homeless individuals, drawing on a deep well of empathy from having personally experienced homelessness.

"I know what it feels like to be homeless," says JoJo. "When I was a child, my family and I stayed at a shelter for a while. Then I experienced homelessness a second time was when I was 15." 

Now at Yawkey House, JoJo channels her experiences into supporting Pine Street’s shelter guests.

140 Grand Opening

Grand Opening of New Housing

On March 7, we celebrated the grand opening of 140 Clarendon Street, Pine Street’s newest residence in Boston’s Back Bay, with 111 units of permanent supportive housing. 

The ribbon-cutting event included remarks by Mayor Michelle Wu, Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities Ed Augustus and Pine Street’s President and Executive Director Lyndia Downie, who discussed the impact of large-scale housing and the meaning of having a home. 

“What a difference a place of your own makes. Having a home makes your life whole,” said Lyndia. “It gives you back your dignity and transforms you from the person who has nowhere to go to the person who has a key.”

Our Home Remedy fundraising breakfast brings together over 500 of Greater Boston’s corporate and philanthropic leaders to support Pine Street in ending homelessness.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Lee Pelton, president and CEO of The Boston Foundation, which has supported Pine Street for over 40 years. Pelton is a social justice leader who focuses on equity and tapping into the potential of Boston’s underserved populations. 

Funds raised will assist over 2,000 individuals who turn to Pine Street each day for help in rebuilding their lives.
