Roberto J. — A Place of His Own

Roberto grew up in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, where he held jobs in an auto parts shop and in event security. During the pandemic, these businesses shut down, and Roberto could no longer afford his apartment.

“I had never been homeless,” says Roberto. “I couldn’t believe that after working all those years, this could happen to me.”

Roberto then came to the Men’s Inn shelter. With the support of his case manager, he focused on finding a permanent place to live. Now, Roberto is enjoying an apartment of his own and getting to know the residents in his building and his new neighborhood.

Lyndia Downie on GBH’s
Boston Public Radio

Pine Street President and Executive Director Lyndia Downie recently sat down with hosts Jim Braude and Margery Eagan on Boston Public Radio to discuss the city’s ongoing housing crisis and Pine Street’s work to find solutions that end homelessness.

“We have been working hard to build housing with support services,” Lyndia says. “About 20 percent of people who are homeless really need intense services to get out of homelessness; they’re struggling with mental health or medical issues. We’ve been very focused on housing that group.”

Outreach — Helping People Stay Safe in the Summer Heat

As temperatures in Boston have soared to the mid-90s for the past couple of weeks, Pine Street’s outreach team has worked day and night, distributing cold water, sunscreen, light clothing, food and bug spray to individuals living on the street.

These efforts are crucial to preventing heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and heatstroke, for these vulnerable community members, as staff encourage people to come to Pine Street’s air-conditioned shelters.

As always, their goal is to help people move off the streets and into the safety and stability of a permanent home, where they can begin to rebuild their lives.
