Hopeful Signs Amid Challenges
CommonWealth Beacon, a policy and civic life publication, ran an op-ed based on a recent study by Boston Indicators, co-authored by Pine Street’s Lyndia Downie and the Boston Foundation’s Lee Pelton.
One of the study’s key findings showed that despite low housing vacancy rates and high rents in Greater Boston, only 9 percent of the homeless population experiences chronic homelessness, compared to a national rate of 22 percent.
The piece also features Joe, a former tenant, who called the Boston Common “home” before securing an apartment in a Pine Street residence. Now living in independent housing, Joe’s story highlights the effectiveness of supportive housing in successfully addressing homelessness.
