Leroy W. — Grateful for His Home

Leroy came to Boston looking for career opportunities. While he worked for several years at a restaurant, he began to experience health issues. As his medical bills mounted, Leroy drained his savings. When he could no longer afford his apartment, Leroy became homeless.

He turned to Pine Street Inn for a safe place to stay while he searched for housing, working with his case manager to secure an apartment in one of Pine Street’s supportive housing locations. Now, Leroy has lived in a Pine Street South End residence for four years, working through his health issues and enjoying the community around him.

"Everyone in my building likes spending time with each other. We eat lunch together, make dinner and watch TV as a group," says Leroy. "I’m so grateful to have a place to call my own."

Thanksgiving

Bringing the Community Together

Pine Street Inn’s annual Thanksgiving Day meal brought together Men’s Inn and Yawkey House guests, with dedicated volunteers and staff who prepared and served a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, stuffing and all the fixings.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, U.S. Senator Ed Markey, State Representative Aaron Michlewitz, City Councilor John FitzGerald and Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy visited Pine Street to carve turkeys, helping make the day special for those who have lost connection to their home and family.

"I’m thankful for being here, for having a place to lay my head," says Mayra D., a guest on the pathway to securing housing in the new year. "Pine Street is like my second family."

Gift Giving

Making the Season Special for
Shelter Guests

Earlier this month, volunteers came together to make the holidays bright for Pine Street Inn’s shelter guests. Ninety volunteers and supporters joined with staff to wrap more than 3,000 sweatshirts, hats, socks and gloves to keep guests warm this winter.

These gifts were distributed by the Procter and Gamble volunteer team during Pine Street's annual gift-giving event at the Men's Inn. For most, these are the only gifts they will receive for the holidays.

Thank you to all who participated in delivering good cheer to our guests for the holidays.

Lyndia Downie Interviewed
on GBH Radio

Recently, President Lyndia Downie spoke with Boston Public Radio’s Margery Eagan and Andrea Cabral, discussing what it means to have a sense of community during the holidays. "It is such a hard time to be homeless," says Lyndia. "It's not just about having a nice meal; it's about bringing volunteers in so people aren't feeling so lonely."

Lyndia also spoke about Pine Street’s efforts to expand housing, which has exceeded 1,100 apartments with the opening of the organization’s largest supportive housing location. "We’ve started moving people into 140 new units in Jamaica Plain," announced Lyndia. "We’re making some good progress."
