Looking Forward to a Place of Her Own

Denise, 49, spent nearly a decade in Florida caring for her sick mother. When her mother passed away, Denise moved to Boston to live with her cousin. However, that fell through, and Denise became homeless.

"I came to Boston to be closer to medical experts to treat my fibromyalgia. When I got here, my cousin didn’t respond to my phone calls, so I took it that she changed her mind," says Denise. "Luckily, I was able to connect with an old friend who let me stay with her for a few months. I didn’t want to be a burden, so I left."

With no place to go, Denise came to Yawkey House, Pine Street’s shelter for women. Now, she is receiving the support she needs to move forward with her life.

Winter Walk 2025

Join Winter Walk 2025

Join Pine Street Inn for the 9th annual Winter Walk. The Walk offers a first-hand experience where participants walk together outside in the elements during the cold of winter, seeing the world through the eyes of people experiencing homelessness.

This year’s two-mile walk takes place on Sunday, February 9 at 8:30 AM, starting on the Boston Common. We invite you to join us as part of #TeamPineStreet and walk to provide the resources to continue the critical work of moving vulnerable individuals from the streets and shelter into the safety and stability of a permanent home.

Officials Tour Pine Street Inn’s
Newest Residence

Pine Street Inn’s newly opened residence on Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, hosted a visit by Secretary Ed Augustus of the Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, which supports Pine Street’s housing efforts. Secretary Augustus, along with Undersecretary of Housing Development Catherine Racer and The Community Builders' CEO Bart Mitchell, joined Pine Street’s President and Executive Director Lyndia Downie to tour the building and meet with residents.

"Thank you to Secretary Augustus and Undersecretary Racer for visiting this beautiful new building on Washington Street and meeting residents. Hearing their stories highlights the urgent need for housing," says Lyndia. "We deeply appreciate their support of Pine Street’s work to end homelessness."

Developed in partnership with The Community Builders, a builder of affordable housing, the residence features 140 apartments along with support services and is the largest permanent housing project of its kind in New England.
