Vaughn — "A Sense of Community"

Vaughn became homeless several years ago when a long-term relationship ended, and he moved out of the apartment he shared with his partner. Vaughn looked for a place of his own, but he could not afford the high rents in the Boston area. With nowhere to go, he ended up sleeping in abandoned buildings and parks before finally coming into shelter.

"I was tired of living on the street and decided to go to Pine Street Inn. That’s where I met a caseworker who helped me through the housing application process," says Vaughn, who secured an apartment in one of Pine Street’s residences.

"Now, I have my own apartment," says Vaughn. "People in the building are friendly, and I meet other tenants just by sitting on the front steps. There is a real sense of community here."

Lyndia Downie on GBH

Lyndia Downie on GBH Radio

Pine Street Inn President and Executive Director Lyndia Downie and RODE Architects Principal and Co-Founder Eric Robinson spoke with hosts Jim Braude and Margery Eagan on Boston Public Radio.

During the interview, Lyndia and Eric discussed new housing with 140 apartments in Jamaica Plain in partnership with The Community Builders, as well as the impact that large-scale housing has on ending homelessness.

"I can’t say enough about a neighborhood like JP, where they stood up and said, 'We want housing, we want it to be affordable, and we’ll support this.' That makes all the difference," says Lyndia. "To be homeless and think that a neighborhood would say, 'You can be part of our neighborhood now,' does so much for people."

Housing Spring Celebration

Celebrating Spring

This month, staff and tenants celebrated spring at one of Pine Street Inn’s residences in Dorchester. Residents gathered for refreshments, music and good company.

"This is a great opportunity for tenants to come together and have fun," says Claudine Bernadin, associate director of supportive housing. "The turnout was fantastic. Dozens of residents joined the party. This is what building community is all about."

As the weather warms up, barbecues and other community-building events will be held in many of Pine Street’s residences to foster a sense of belonging.
