Teresa — Feeling at Ease

Teresa left an abusive family situation, looking for a better life. Even though she worked three jobs, she was unable to find an apartment she could afford because of Boston’s high cost of living.

"I was homeless for almost nine years and lived on the streets for several years," says Teresa. Teresa first learned about Pine Street Inn through the street outreach team, who convinced her to come to Yawkey House women’s shelter. Once there, she worked with staff to secure an apartment at a Pine Street residence in Dorchester.

Eight years later, Teresa continues to enjoy her apartment and the surrounding community. "I feel at ease here," Teresa says. "Now, if I see someone on the street and struggling, I tell them to get help from Pine Street."

Players Give Back

Players and coaches from the New England Patriots visited Pine Street's shelters for an afternoon of volunteering.

The team worked together to prepare 500 sandwiches for shelter guests and individuals living on the streets, and later delighted guests at the Men's Inn and Yawkey House women's shelter by serving lunch and preparing ice cream sundaes.

"The New England Patriots Foundation has been a partner and friend of Pine Street for more than 30 years," says April Stevens, Pine Street's deputy director. "It really takes a community working together to end homelessness. Thank you for being part of our volunteer family."

Since 2011, Homeless Court has served more than 1,100 people. "Our whole purpose is to assist folks who are taking definite, concrete steps to turn things around," says Judge Coffey. "We call this the court of second chances."
