Melissa — Rebuilding Her Life

Melissa worked hard all her life to support herself and her family. After becoming estranged from her loved ones and losing her housing, she experienced homelessness.

"When I was younger, I was in a serious car accident and was prescribed painkillers. Over time, I developed a dependence, and that eventually contributed to me becoming homeless. I decided to enter recovery because I didn’t want to keep living that way," Melissa shares.

Melissa faced homelessness a second time during the pandemic. Although she was working, Melissa could not afford Boston’s high rents. She came to Pine Street Inn’s Yawkey House shelter for help. Now in one of Pine Street’s residences, Melissa is thriving.

"I’ve been in recovery for nine years now. Finding Pine Street was one of the best things that’s happened to me," Melissa says.

New Food Pantry Opens at Pine Street Housing

Earlier this year, the housing services team established a new food pantry to provide emergency food kits for tenants in Pine Street housing. Supported by Pine Street’s food services team, Greater Boston Food Bank and Fair Foods, the pantry will help residential staff across Pine Street’s 39 housing locations address a rise in food insecurity among tenants along with providing information about other local food pantries. Each kit provides one week of shelf-stable food for a resident.

"We've seen an increased need in emergency food resources from our residents, and we've dramatically expanded the offering of emergency food kits through an on-site pantry at The Lyndia," says Matt Pyne, Pine Street’s senior director of housing services. "This heightened effort provides temporary food security support while housing services staff aid residents in establshing long-term strategies to meet their needs."
