Sam — From a Car to a Home

A lifelong Bostonian, Sam joined the Army when he turned 18 but experienced health challenges while in the service.

After leaving the Army, Sam returned to Boston and worked as a carpenter, while struggling to find stable housing. "Boston rents were so expensive that, even with a job, I couldn’t afford my own apartment," he shares. "One winter, while I was renting a room, the owners asked me to leave because their son was coming back to live with them."

With nowhere to go, Sam began living out of his car. Everything changed when Pine Street Inn’s veterans outreach team connected with him. "If it weren’t for Pine Street, I’d still be sleeping in my car," Sam says.

Outreach Team Boston25

Veterans Outreach Team Featured on Boston25 News

According to the City of Boston's 2025 Homeless Census, veteran homelessness in the city has decreased by 34 people, from 228 veterans in 2024 to 191 in 2025, but our work continues. In a recent feature on Boston25 News, Amanda Proctor, clinical supervisor for the veterans outreach team, discussed her team’s efforts to help veterans living on the street.

"Our motto is never, never, never give up," says Amanda. She helps veterans with everything from housing applications to disability claims to securing medical and behavioral health care. "We’ll be out there until every last person is safe."

Last year, our staff worked with more than 300 veterans through street outreach, job training, housing and shelter, to support those who have served our country in rebuilding their lives.

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month

November is Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Month. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, a time centered on home, food and family, we are focused on those in our community who face hunger and homelessness.

Because we know that a home ends homelessness, Pine Street remains committed to developing housing with support services. These services include access to health care, employment opportunities and food assistance, all aimed at helping people move off the street, out of shelter and back to a home and community.

Warming Centers

Winter Warming Centers Now Open

Pine Street’s winter warming centers at the Men’s Inn and Yawkey House women’s shelter opened on November 15. These warming centers are open 24 hours a day through mid-April, providing warmth and safety during the cold of winter.

"As we add more beds and open the warming centers in our shelters for the winter, our top priority is the comfort of our guests," says Josh O’Brien, senior director of emergency shelters. "It gives people hope to know they have a safe place to stay, a hot meal and people who care about them."
