Stitching Her Life Back Together

Francisca suffered the unimaginable, losing her husband, business and home, all within a year. She and her husband had built a successful sewing business, and when he passed away she could not keep up with the orders, eventually losing the business. Then she lost her home.

Depressed and afraid, Francisca came to Pine Street Inn looking for help. Staff worked with her to create a plan to rebuild her business and get back on her feet. While staying in the Women’s Inn, Francisca searched for jobs and found one with a company that makes pillows and curtains. She was thrilled to find this job, as it fit with her passion as a seamstress.

Building up her savings for a security deposit and first/last month’s rent, Francisca started looking for an apartment and found a place in Quincy.

Pine Street's Housing program helped pay a portion of her rent for three months while she continued to save up money to re-establish her sewing business. Francisca saved for the tools she needed to purchase over several months, successfully relaunching her business.

Francisca expresses her gratitude for the support she received from Pine Street:

You helped me start my life over. I can't thank you enough."

Pine Street Inn Launches Portraits of Humanity, a Look at the Faces of Homelessness

As part of our 50th anniversary, we worked with professional headshot photographer Charlie Abrahams, who volunteered his time to take portraits of guests staying in our shelters, including the photo below. His photographs capture the emotions, reality and hope of men and women struggling with homelessness in "Portraits of Humanity."
