Remembering Monsignor Francis H. Kelley
Pine Street Inn mourns the passing of Monsignor Francis H. Kelley, Pine Street’s last living founder. Frank, as he was called by those who knew him, was part of the Association of Boston Urban Priests (ABUP), formed in 1967. Dedicated to social justice, ABUP led efforts to reopen a shelter for homeless men, located on Chinatown’s Pine Street.
In 1969, ABUP created Pine Street Inn, a nonprofit organization, chaired by Frank until 1998, when he became a lifetime trustee. In 1980, Frank led efforts to move the shelter to Pine Street’s current location in the South End. Frank’s commitment to those experiencing homelessness never wavered, and he remained actively engaged in the Pine Street community until the end.
Frank had deep respect for the staff, guests and tenants, and he will be missed not only at Pine Street, but throughout the city.
